Thief Chapter 4 - The Great Safe

This is a slightly more annoying puzzle. I won't lie to you, I didn't have the patience, so I looked up the combination. Yes, I know. It seems like it's printed on the map. The trouble is, the numbers are all out of order. Hey, if you're reading this, you're looking for answers, so don't judge me.

So, in order to get inside the safe, you have to do the following:

Pull the big lever. This lowers the safe.

Check the left and right side of the safe. There is a button on each side. Push one (it doesn't matter which), then run to the other side to push the other. There is a timer here, so run.

Enter the first three numbers of the combination on the left hand set of dials. The numbers are 3-1-9 (THANKS IGN!)

Now it's time for a cut scene. Remember how the Baron said he'd get revenge, after you torched his favorite brothel? Well, this is it. He used his precious safe as bait, and you swallowed it hook, line, sinker, and fishing pole. Boy, are you going to have a fun time in the bathroom passing all of that!

After the cut scene, you need to get to the safe A.S.A.P. You are out numbered and out classed, at lest as far as fighting goes. So crotch, wait for the first two guards to go by, and swoop to the climbing wall up ahead. There's stairs to your left, and some food on a barrel. I had to take out a guard that was blocking the door. The area is very well lit, so I didn't even bother to try and sneak past or attack.

After the guard, you should have a clear shot at the door. Enter the second half of the combination, 0-1-8, and go inside. As you might have guessed, it doesn't have a lot of gold in it. How would you be able to carry so much... Wait... The game is very liberal in what you can carry, isn't it. I guess a truck load of gold would be realistic to in this game.

However, it's not gold. You are compelled by Erin to gather the mystical poppies as you move forward. After you grab the last one, you're in another ethereal realm, similar to the one in her hideout. Just follow her as she runs through, until you reach a statue. You're given a new location to find Erin, before you're mysteriously transported outside the tower.

It's then time for another cut scene, and a few statistics about how well (or bad) you played the chapter. Congratulations, you finished Chapter Four! Not to mention that you're half way through the game. Yep. Only eight chapters, and a couple of side missions.

Thief Chapter 4 - Surviving the Explosion

Now that you've gotten past the guards, you've entered a tower that's not only on fire, but starting to collapse. Why? Out of shear greed, you decided to hunt down a safe that may not exist. Pure genius!

O.K., technically you haven't entered it yet. You have to go across the courtyard, and get past all of the exploding, flaming gas mains. At least the guards are ignoring you. They're too busy getting set on fire to care about you.

Once you're inside, just follow the ledge to a pipe, hop on the pipe, and follow it to a ladder. Climb up to the platform, and hope onto the gas main that's spewing fire. A gentle word of advice: do NOT use swoop to get past the flames. Just time them and walk over. Swooping lands you at the wrong spot, just as the flames come up. Just take your time, there doesn't seem to be a timer here.

At the end of the pipe is a tunnel. Go through, and at the end, crotch to enter another duct. After you leave, turn left, and crotch under the flame coming from the pipe. Just to your left is an electrical box and a door. Use your wire cutters on the box, and open the door.

The gases in this area are slowly killing you, so move fast. Pick the lock to the next door, head inside, and go straight to the valve. Turn it, crotch, and go under the safety door. Head down the ramp to reach the fresh air. Pick the lock on the door, and go inside. There's some food to your left as you enter. Move to the end of the room, and there's a collectible item (Soldier's Memory) on the ground, next to the dead body. There's also a bit of loot on the crates next to him.

Move on, and look for another elevator switch to your left. Open the door, and head up (would you REALLY want to head down, while the building's collapsing). After the doors open again, follow the icon to a big door that can only be opened by pulling the lever next to it. Basso is inside. You're given a cut scene that warns you about the safe, but will you listen? Of course not!

The cut scene ends with you in another elevator. The elevator gets stuck after awhile, so you have to climb out, and hop around. There area is very small, so it shouldn't take long to notice the short climbing wall nearby. Hop up, and crotch to enter another duct. Follow it to the end, and then jump down to the floor. You've found the Safe Chamber!

Theif Chapter 4 - Escape the Architect's Home

As you may have noticed, I dropped the previous numbering system. As I have stated previously, I really don't like this game. It was just a convenient test game for my EZ Cap device. However, I seemed to get hits off of the YouTube videos from the game play, as well as the test clips. So, I decided to finish the game, and do a guide.

The old numbering system was based on the test clip numbers, and had nothing to do with the actual game play. As such, chapter four was being listed as Thief 8. From now on, I will title the blog segments according to the chapter in the game, or the side mission. I will then do a game review after I've finished it.

Now for the story, as we left it:

This section starts with a cut scene. You have just finished the puzzle, and have grabbed the blueprints that you needed. The guards have finally busted open the door, and plan on shooting to kill... Just watch the video. It will be more fun.

Before the cut scene ends, press and hold the left trigger, so you'll be running. Also be sure to have the left analog stick moving you forward. If you stop, or try to jump off of the railing, the guard dogs will get you. If you run into the dogs at the end of the roof, they will kill you. So just run, automatically hop over the table, veer slightly to your left, and automatically jump off of the roof.

Once, you're past the dogs, KEEP RUNNING FORWARD! The only time you can stop is when you enter the next cut scene. Take a brief rest, you've earned it. Even Garrett takes a breather in the clip.

The guards are currently leaving you alone, so check the area for a stack of crates. The one on top will be wrapped in burlap. Climb these, and head up to the ledge. Climb up the rope, hop onto the roof, and enter the door. Crotch down, and head into the vents. It's a good thing they didn't have Myth Busters back then. They would have told him the vents would make too much noise to work for stealth.

Follow the ducts to the end, and be prepared. After the load screen, you'll have, ANOTHER CUT SCENE.

Thief Chapter 4: Finding The Secret Blueprints

Now that you're inside the building, look around. The only room that you need to avoid for now is the study. Granted, you can go straight there, but there's a lot of loot to be had, so don't.

As you sneak around, you'll see that there is someone blocking the stairs going up, so examine everything on the ground floor first. Past the kitchen on the main level, there';s a wine cellar.  sneak around, or take everyone out. Use focus to find the hidden switch. Once you do, use focus again, so see that there are a few pressure plates on the floor. Follow them to the end of the red wire, and you find a fuse box. Use your wire cutters, and they're off.

Follow the passage to the end, and you're in the greenhouse. Turn the valve to release some steam. This gives you a little cover from the guards. However, they will notice an open door, so be prepared to take them on, if you didn't before entering the house. If you need it, there's a poppy to the left, after you leave the greenhouse.

Go across the now guard free yard (or sneak if you're taking that path), and use a blunt arrow on the second floor ladder in the corner. Follow the ledge until you come across an open duct. Enter it, and follow it to a room with two women talking. It doesn't matter that the room is very well lit. Just drop down, and follow the ledge on your right. It will take you to a canopy bed with a wooden top. Jump onto that, then jump down behind the dressing screen. Swoop past the women, and to the door. If you want to try for some treasure, go right ahead. But be prepared to take out two innocents if you're caught.

Notice the fancy, and HEAVY, chandelier hanging above the guard at the bottom of the other stair case? If you happen to have a nice, sharp arrow handy, take him out the easy way. Or try to hop over the rail behind him. Whatever works for you. There is also a second guard on the far end of that landing, so it will be easier if you sneak up, take him out, and then hit poor ol' Wile E Coyote with the chandelier.

Don't go down yet, however. There's still some exploration to do on this floor. One of the rooms will have a staircase going up. Unlike the previous set of stairs, this guard is too concerned that the person inside has the Gloom (the disease plaguing the town). Sneak up and take him out, so you can get inside the room. If you bought the razor, you can also grab the painting on the wall across from the door. The door itself doesn't open, so just head back down. It's time for the study!

Head on in, and wait for the guard to stoke the fire. Once he does, sneak up behind him and take him down. The woman inside will run off screaming if yu let her, so take her down, too. Grab everything that you can find, then use focus to find the secret passage. Pull the switch, and head on through.

Take the elevator up, and you'll find Jacob hanging around. Or rather, you'll find that he's been hung by his neck with a noose. You now need to find the plans that he was looking for, and get out of there before it's too late. Climb the ladder, and look for a print that you can interact with. Besides concealing a hidden switch, it's a clue for the upcoming puzzle.

Interact with a pulley, to drop your friend to the ground. Don't worry about the guards outside, yet. They won't come in until you're done. Head back down, and grab Jacob's pen. Hey, you need the money more than he does now! Stand on the square tile, and start the puzzle.

This is a very simple puzzle. All you have to do is rotate the sections of the tower model, until the "windows," or whatever they are, face you. The sections have 3 sides that are basically smooth, so it's not hard to figure out which side should face you.

Once you're done, you get a cut scene.

Thief Chapter 4 Part 3: Find Jacob

The first thing that you have to do is enter the Architect's house. This won't be easy, since it's heavily guarded. There are also two dogs caged in the area. The dogs are very alert, and not only do the guards patrol, but some carry torches. There are two small buildings nearby. A greenhouse to the left, and what I believe is a shed to the right.

As you can see in the video, I made a few attempts to just sneak in, and I kept getting killed. Garrett really isn't made to do a lot of fighting. Eventually, I got as close to the greenhouse dog as I could, and shot it. I let the two guards for that area come by, and took them out. I was then able to swoop to the door, and open it. I also closed it as soon as I got in.

The clips over lap here. This clip shows part of my exploration to the house. My apologizes for not editing the clips. I am trying to show the game play in as natural a way as possible. This is my first play through of the game. The whole idea of this blog is to give you an idea of what the game play feels like, as well as provide solutions. I don't finish the game, then replay it with all of the answers ready for me as I capture game play.

Next up, exploring the house, in order to find Jacob.

Thief Chapter 4 Part 2: Basso Is Missing

This is another VERY short blog. Now that you've entered the Broken Barrack, you're told by Orion that Basso is missing. Orion claims that the Barron's men have taken him, and is holding him at the Baron's Keep.

To get there, follow the icon to the door. You'll have to swoop past a group of idle gossipers, in the same area that you did before. The game recycles a few map areas, so you'll recognize the area. If you choose to re-explore the area, you'll notice that all of the grates have been bolted down again, and any guards that you knocked out have woken up.

You'll notice that the video doesn't show me going back to the spot. I had accepted a side mission, involving Ector's Emporium, and will be posting the related clips separately.  I also did some misc exploring of the dock area. If you're having a hard time retracing your steps, please reference the Thief Part 5 video. The only difference is, instead of heading right, to the short guard tower near the hanging body, you go left, and straight to the large gate.

Thief Chapter 4 Part 1

This clip is basically all cut scene, with a little bit of traveling from point A to point B. Essentially, you're doing maintenance on your gear, when you get a message via bird. The message lets you know that something bad is happening at the Broken Barrack, so you go there A.S.A.P.

Not much of a blog post, but I'm trying to make shorter clips, due to long upload and "editing" times. You'll also see that there's a lot of game play omitted from this part of the guide. I did a lot of misc traveling/exploring while capturing, and it had nothing to do with the storyline. I also started a side mission, which I'll write up separately.
